Currently, they’re illegal in New York. For Louisiana, new laws regarding the usage of these hoverboards will go into effect beginning January 1. Here’s what you need to know:
- The boards can only be used on streets where the posted speed limit is no more than 35 mph, unless there is a bike lane.
- The board may not exceed a speed of 15 mph.
- Riders must wear a helmet.
- Riders must be at least 16 years old.
- Riders will be cited with a DUI if they are using the hoverboard while under the influence.
- Boards must be accessorized with reflectors and/ or lights for nighttime visibility.
Violating any of the above laws can result in a fine of up to $250.
